2018 negroni social cocktail competition...

For the 8th annual Negroni Social, Douglas Derrick and Campari America are hosting a Portland-wide cocktail competition to select 11 Negroni variations that will be featured at this year’s event alongside Nostrana’s Negroni variation.   Winning recipes will also be featured at Nostrana, Portland’s iconic regional Italian restaurant, in the year to follow as part of the restaurant’s long-running “Negroni of the Month” program. Winning recipes will also be featured in a recipe book commemorating the event.

The Negroni Social is to be held on Sunday, June 3rd, celebrating the kick-off of IMBIBE Magazine’s 6th Annual Negroni Week, and providing a chance to enjoy the city’s best Negroni variations. The event is a fundraiser, with proceeds benefitting a Portland non-profit.  The competition and event are sponsored by Campari America.

Please read this entire outline completely before submitting a recipe.

GUIDELINES:
Create an original Negroni variation and submit to Negroni Social by APRIL 1st at midnight.  Our staff will replicate and anonymously taste for selection as one of the 12 featured cocktails at the 2018 Negroni Social and subsequent feature as a “Negroni of the Month” at Nostrana.

  • Submitter must be a bartender at a bar or restaurant within Portland city limits and recipes must be original creations by the submitter.

  • Recipes must feature Campari Bitter as an ingredient.

  • If the finished recipe contains a competitive product that is comparable to a product in the Campari America portfolio, we ask that the Campari product is featured in its place.

  • Recipe must be submitted in ounces, drops, or dashes and scaled for a single serving.

  • Recipe must include a detailed description of the garnish, glassware, and ice. Note: presentation of your cocktail to our anonymized tasting panel may need to be varied to match our glassware and ice.

  • Drinks at the event will be served full sized. The volume of any recipe served “up” must be a minimum 2.75oz but may not exceed 3.75oz (pre-dilution).  “Highball or rocks” cocktails must be a minimum 3.0oz but may not exceed 5.5 oz (pre dilution depending on glassware size).

  • All ingredients that are made-from-scratch must include a complete recipe to fulfill a batch to satisfy 20 full-sized finished drinks.

  • All ingredients should be easily obtainable - even those made from scratch — without difficulty or extreme expense.  Note: we may ask you to provide made-from-scratch or specialty ingredients for our anonymous tasting panel and event and later for the on-menu time at Nostrana.

  • Recipe should take no longer than 90 seconds to construct. Note: ingredients prepared in advance, like pre-made syrup or garnish, are not considered in construction time.

  • Approximate base pour-cost of the cocktail should be under $5 in Oregon.

  • Winners will be asked to present their cocktail to the Nostrana staff in the month that it is featured on the NOTM menu. This may include assisting in preparing specialty ingredients and training the bar staff to construct the drink perfectly during service.

  • JUDGING CRITERIA, 25 POSSIBLE POINTS: Appearance 0-5; Taste 0-10; Creativity 0-5; Functionality 0-3; Campari America Portfolio Usage; 0-2

Winners must agree to have their drink, their name, and affiliated establishment’s name featured in the following:

  • on their establishment’s menu during Negroni Week (June 4-10, 2018)

  • on Nostrana’s “Negroni of the Month” (NOTM) menu for a a full month between July 2017 through June 2018 (Date TBD based on ingredient seasonality)

  • on their establishment’s menu during the same month that Nostrana lists the cocktail as a NOTM (Dates TBD)
