2016 Press Release

PORTLAND, Ore (April 15, 2016) - On Monday, June 6, the sixth annual Negroni Social will kickoff Portland’s Negroni Week with a costume gala at Century Bar.  The evening will bring together an invitation-only crowd of Portland’s greatest bartending talents to serve 12 full-sized variations from the Negroni of the Month series on Nostrana’s “The Fruit of the Vine” menu, featuring wine professionals from across the country, each with a unique take on the classic Italian cocktail.   And for the sixth year, the event will benefit Outside In, a Portland non-profit organization that provides much-needed medical and mental health services and resources to homeless youth. To date, the event has donated $15,000 to the cause, and organizers are hoping 2016 will be the best year yet.

Each year, the Social takes on a new theme, reflected in the event’s decor and, most importantly, the attendees’ costumes. This year’s theme is “Negronis in the Garden of Good & Evil”.  Century Bar (930 SE Sandy Blvd.), one of 2016’s most anticipated new openings, is the newest venture by the Lightning Bar Collective, and the Negroni Social will double as the public’s first peek at the venue.  Guests will be greeted by a lush, dark, and opulent space, reflective of the “good and evil” theme and the celebratory atmosphere in Portland newest jaw-dropper.

The event was founded at Nostrana in 2011 by restaurant industry professionals Douglas Derrick (bar manager at Ava Gene’s) and Nicholas Suhor (general manager at Nostrana). The duo was inspired to create the Negroni of the Month program, showcasing different applications of the Negroni on a rotating menu each month.  This special menu is currently offered at Nostrana (1401 SE Morrison St.), and each year, it showcases 12 Negroni variations- one for each month-- with recipes by professional chefs, renowned bartenders, and restaurant industry celebrities from across the country.  This year’s “Fruit of the Vine” series features recipes by the country’s best sommeliers and wine industry professionals, and all 12 of the recipes will be reproduced at the Negroni Social at 12 separate bars, staffed by Portland’s best bartenders.

For the second year, the Negroni Social team is working with Beckham Estate (Sherwood, OR) to age more than 300 Negronis for the party’s welcome cocktail in amphorae, hand-made clay vessels crafted by Andrew Beckham at the vineyard.   Douglas will be creating a wine-based Negroni with Beckham's rosé, Aria gin, and Campari.  And, for the most exciting part - after the amphorea are filled with the cocktail, the vessel is buried underground to age for seven weeks.  When guests arrive at the Negroni Social, they will be greeted by a bartender nestled between large amphorea, and will be handed one of the aged subterranean cocktails as they enter the Garden of Good and Evil.
